What happens in a coaching session?
If you’ve never worked with a coach before, the idea might seem a little intimidating, but coaching can really help you make positive changes in your life and identify the most effective way to reach your goals. It’s not a case of someone simply telling you what the best course of action is. A coach works with you to help you decide for yourself how to move forward and will also offer support and feedback to help you to stay focused on your goals
Coaching sessions generally last between forty five minutes and hour and after the initial assessment, they can be conducted face-to-face or remotely. As well as ensuing a good’ fit’ between the coach and coachee, the initial session will establish the outcomes desired from the coaching. Each session will then be tailored to specific needs with the coach and coachee working through a series of one-to-one discussions, taking stock of the current situation and exploring the thoughts, feelings and behaviour of the coachee with a view to identifying the areas they need to address and change.
Coaching may be undertaken in a Directive or Non-Directive style. Directive coaching allows solutions, tools and techniques to be suggested by the coach who may also choose to share their own experiences. A non-directive coach will not offer advice and rarely even give suggestions, but will help someone to see their situation from a different perspective through questioning
A coaching session is both structured and fluid. Every session follows a similar structure, but the content, questions, tools, and topic areas discussed are all directed in the moment by the coachee .
