The latest episode in our Resilience Unravelled series has now been released, Resilience Unravelled – Understanding Codependency.
In this episode, Dr. Russell Thackeray talks to Darlene Lancer, a relationship and codependency expert who is based in Santa Monica in California. Darlene was an entertainment lawyer in Hollywood for twenty years but changed direction and went back to college to study for a Masters in Psychology. Once qualified she started work as a relationship and codependency counsellor and it was after she wrote a blog about codependency that she was asked by the publishers of the ‘Dummies’ series to write ‘Codependency for Dummies’.
In this podcast Darlene talks about codependency and explains that medically there is no actual definition for it so it’s not recognised as a medical disorder. Her definition though is that it’s a lost self, someone whose thinking and behaviour revolves around something external which could be a person, process or substance and how it can often affect people who come from dysfunctional families where abuse, rigid rules, addiction, or mental or physical illness was present.
Darlene also talks about the behaviour and thinking of codependents – how they react to and feel responsible for others, can be anxious and want to manage, control or manipulate by trying to please. One of the main symptoms of codependency is low self-esteem and Darlene explains how in some countries this can be seen as shame and how important building self-esteem is in dealing with codependency.
