The latest episode in our Resilience Unravelled series has now been released, Resilience Unravelled – Thriving not just surviving.
In this episode, Dr. Russell Thackeray talks to Emma J Bell who is based in North Berwick on the East Coast of Scotland. Emma was a Corporate Employment Lawyer and Partner in a law firm for twenty years where she became interested in workplace motivation and engagement and set up a leadership development programme for her team. Ten years ago she resigned from her role to take on more leadership and coaching and then wrote her first book whilst working part time as an employment judge. Her book ‘The True You’ looks at how we develop conditioning throughout our lives, the neuroplascity of the brain and how we can change neural networks so we can develop new habits, take on more empowering stories and fulfill personal potential.
In this podcast, Emma talks about her latest research project which involved traveling over 35,000 miles around the world to interview fifty ‘ordinary people’ who had faced different types of adversity and trauma. The one thing they had in common was that they were thriving, the psychological definition being that they had bounced forward and grown and, as a consequence, were living positive and fulfilled lives.
The purpose of the research was to find out if the fifty ‘thrivers’ were using the same resilience strategies and, despite a variety of circumstances, they each credit their ability to flourish in the face of adversity to just nine key strategies. Emma talks about some of these strategies in this podcast and uses stories from the people she interviewed to show how they can be used in day-to-day life. The first strategy she outlines is self-care and how deliberately taking steps to look after our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing is essential because if we look after our ourselves we are better able to serve others. Another of the strategies she discusses is the choices we make when responding to situations. However large or small, we need to be very clear that however we respond we are making a choice and that it is is the first step in taking back control of a situation.
Emma has applied the strategies systematically in her own life and found it made a huge difference to her on an individual level and to her clients in her coaching practice. Her book about the project, ‘Choose to Thrive. Nine Secrets to Uncover Your Inner Resilience’ is being published in May 2020 by Audible and will actually use some of the ‘thrivers’ telling their own stories. As well as the stories the book will highlight the nine resilience strategies and six or seven practices that can be applied immediately.
