The latest episode in our Resilience Unravelled series has now been released, Resilience Unravelled Start writing your book.
In this episode, Dr. Russell Thackeray talks to Helen Pollock, an Amazon-bestselling ghostwriter, non-fiction book coach and business content specialist. Helen had a twenty year marketing and PR career working for organisations as diverse as Aston Martin, The Royal Shakespeare Company, computer games companies and Plumb Center before setting up her own business, The Content Doc. Whether it’s a blog post or a book, writing is something Helen is incredibly committed to. She believes that everyone can become a better writer and that creating a simple framework for content creation is the key to great business writing.
In this podcast Helen shares some of her tips and techniques for starting to write a book. Before you even start to write she feels there is some preparation that needs to be done including taking an audit of your audience, undertaking some customer and competition research, seeing what’s currently available in the sector, and deciding what the most appropriate format would be. Once you’ve got the background information together, it’s time to put together a table of contents or ‘book skeleton’ that you can then start to ‘flesh out’. Having the ‘book skeleton’ in place should provide a structure that is easy to follow and help the words to flow. If you find you do get ‘stuck’ as you start to add content its best to take a break and then come back to it. Trying to ‘push through’ doesn’t work and often the solution will come when you’re actually doing something else!
It can take between three to six months to complete a book and Helen feels that completing it can become a test of resilience. Procrastination and a lack of focus or organisation can stop many people progressing so having a schedule with regular time slots is essential. It could be an hour a day or just a couple of hours a week but its important to try to stick to it.
