The latest episode in our Resilience Unravelled series has now been released, Resilience Unravelled – Preventing suicide
In this episode, Dr. Russell Thackeray talks to Dr. Sally Spencer Thomas, a psychologist based in Colorado. Dr. Thomas has worked in the mental health field for a number of years and in 2004, after her brother died by suicide after a difficult battle with bipolar condition, she became very focused on suicide and what could be done to prevent it.
In this podcast, Dr. Thomas talks about the variations and fluctuations in suicide intensity’ and the different way suicide presents itself – in some groups it’s something that’s always there, in others it can be a reaction to events that move people from thought to action and in others it ebbs and flows throughout their life. She also talks about how people express their feelings and highlights that there is very rarely a warning flag about suicide.
Dr. Thomas is very interested in how we can ‘protect’ against suicide and discusses how building a quality social support network of people you trust and are willing to be there at all times is essential. A positive social group that pulls together enhances wellbeing as can having a sense of mission and purpose. The feeling that what you are doing in your life matters, that you are contributing to something and other people notice you is also important in suicide prevention. She also discusses the difficulties friends and family who are left to deal with suicide loss face, the processes they need to go through and the rebuilding that has to take place.
