Put the effort in. Building mental strength
Phil Roberts is a competitive strongman. He also owns his own gym and security firm in Sheffield. When he was a child he was quite nervous and became interested in physical strength and being strong. He began working out in a gym when he was twelve and started strongman training with one of his friends when he was twenty. He very quickly became hooked on the sport.
Participating in strongman competitions was just a hobby as Phil was also a police officer. In 2015 though he left his job to open his own gym and pursue his strongman dreams. He achieved this in 2017 when he was crowned England's strongest man. In 2018 he was second in the UK Strongest Man competition but in 2019 he was very badly injured and could have lost his leg. Phil was determined to move from this possible career ending injury. The mental strength he had developed during his physical training now helped him deal with the injury. He tried to change his perspective by keeping busy, concerning himself only with things he could control and remembering that its up to us as individuals to make choices!
Happily, after major surgery and recuperation Phil was able to return to competition. His feels his mental strength helped him get back and that having a sense of purpose was essential to this. When things go wrong it's no good asking ‘why did it happen?’ We need the mental strength to keep driving forwards.
