The latest episode in our Resilience Unravelled series has now been released, Resilience Unravelled – Personality. Recognise your style and understand its impact.
In this episode, Dr. Russell Thackeray talks to Merrick Rosenberg, a keynote speaker and thought leader on personality styles and team development. Merrick graduated in 1991 and started in his first job but soon realised how difficult some people find working together as a team. He found this a fascinating subject so he undertook an MBA in Organisational Behaviour. He then started to work with people on how they could work better together and create a good company culture. His first company Team Builders Plus was co-founded in 1991 and he discovered personality styles in 1994 and he’s been working in this area ever since.
Merrick teaches people how to use the power of their personality to drive their success, in the workplace, at home and in their relationships. People ask ‘what is personality?’ Merrick feels its the behaviours we display, our thoughts, feelings and actions as well as how we behave in certain situations and what drives this. The point of personality is not just what it means but what you do with it. How you impact on the people around you and whether you impose your personality on them. Sometimes we’re not aware of the impact we have. We need to recognise if we are imposing and what message we’re sending.
It can be hard to change but Merrick feels we should not think of changing, rather of flexing in the moment based on what the people around us need. For example, a colleague might need a lot of detail but you’re not a detail person. So, in the moment can you provide more information? Although it may take some extra energy because of the way you’re wired up, if you flex in the moment you both get your needs met.
There are a large number of personality assessments available. Different models and methods report things in a range of ways. Some of these are not at all user friendly! They can be complex and awkward to navigate. The system Merrick has designed is very simple and is based around DISC. It’s very visual and is linked to four birds that people can relate to. These are the Eagle, the Parrot, the Dove and the Owl. Each bird represents a style of behaviour and can used to convey needs.
Different Personality Styles
Eagles – confident, assertive and in charge
Parrots – talkative, outgoing, fun sociable and charismatic
Doves – calm, peaceful and gentle
Owls –like getting things right, reflective, analytical and knowledgeable.
Most people are a combination of two or sometimes three of the styles. They combine to form our overall personality. Once you know which personality type someone falls into you can you can take a scenario and see how they will approach the situation from their personality type. It’s an easy way of understanding your own style and how to read other people quickly. It can also remove drama from a relationship.
If we use resilience as an example, we can see that each personality type is impacted in different ways by stress. They are resilient in different ways. Parrots go with the flow and focus on the positive which makes them very resilient. Doves can internalise stress so may appear fine but may hold on to issues and find it harder to bounce back quickly. Owls will have a process and plan so can see structure and how things will work out. Eagles will simply focus on the future and advance
One style is not better than another. We need to understand how to make the best of each style and recognise its value and what it brings to the relationship. We need to accept we all have different strengths and then play a role that complements each other.
