The relationship between sleep and memory

Professor Penny Lewis is a neuroscientist specialising in sleep and cognition at Cardiff University where she is currently teaching on the MSc Neuroimaging: Methods and Applications course.

Penny’s work focuses largely on 'sleep engineering' the science of manipulating sleep for cognitive and health benefits and she is looking for ways to maximise sleep’s beneficial properties, enhancing memory, disarming negative emotions, and combating cognitive decline through ageing.

In this podcast Penny talks about the role sleep plays in memory replay, the integration of new and existing knowledge and the emotional responses associated with memory.
