Jeff Foote - Beyond addiction. Science and kindness for positive change.
Dr Jeff Foote is an acclaimed clinical psychologist, co-founder of the Center for Motivation and Change, and Co-Executive Director of CMC: Foundation for Change and has three decades of experience in the addiction treatment field. He has worked on motivational treatment approaches and substance abuse treatment research which included encouraging family assistance and incorporating evidence-based human behavior change principles. Prior to this, he was Deputy Director of the Division of Alcohol Treatment and Research at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, and Senior Research Associate at The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University as well as being team psychologist for the New York Mets for 11 years.
Dr. Foote co-authored the book Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change and is also a contributor to two online resources The Parent’s 20 Minute Guide and The Partner’s 20 Minute Guide, which combine strategies from CRAFT and Motivational Interviewing and specific tools for helping a loved one change.
Most recently he has co-authored a new book, The Beyond Addiction Workbook for Family and Friends: Evidence-Based Skills to Help a Loved One Make Positive Change with Carrie Wilkens PhD and Ken Carpenter PhD. This helps to explain that the most effective way to treat addiction is one of the least utilised: support, kindness, and compassion and the authors draw on fifty years of research to show that it’s where science and kindness meet that creates lasting change.
