The latest episode in our Resilience Unravelled series has now been released, Resilience Unravelled – How emotional conditioning can shape lives
In this episode, Dr. Russell Thackeray talks to Dr. Christine Adams, MD, a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist who has practiced in Louisville, Kentucky for forty years. Dr. Adams undertakes long-term dynamic psychotherapy where she sees patients over several years to help to help them make changes and resolve anxiety and depression issues. Last year she co-authored a new book with her mentor Dr. Homer B. Martin, MD “Living on Automatic: How Emotional Conditioning Shapes Our Lives and Relationships.” which provides a groundbreaking new concept of personalities and relationships based on the authors’ combined 80 years of psychotherapy work with people of all ages.
In this podcast Dr Adams explains the difference between the work undertaken by psychiatrists and psychologists in the USA, and discusses the increasing use of prescribed drugs for mental illnesses since the 1950’s and what she sees as the start of a swing back to more talk based therapies. She also talks about the increase in stress, burnout, depression and anxiety in both personal and working life and how she feels that this increase has come from a combination of people finding it easier to talk about mental health, greater stresses in life and that nowadays there are more low coping people who feel stress more acutely.
Dr Adams discusses the difference between low coping and high coping and how low coping is learned from parents over the first three years of life. She also explains how parents project differently onto each baby and how this emotionally shapes or conditions each child and talks about how high coping and low coping parents raise their children differently and how parenting style changes with different children and alternate because of the situation when the child is born and family stressors at the time.
