Buki Mosaku - Navigating workplace bias

Buki Mosaku is Founder and CEO of London-based DiverseCity Think Tank, a workplace-bias and diversity-and-inclusion consultancy. He is one of the world’s foremost bias-navigation experts and feels he has cracked the code for calling out unconscious workplace bias and stopping it in its tracks.

Unconscious reverse bias stems from societal conditioning and past experiences about the majority. It can have long-term effects on minority representation and team cohesion when the person who is the victim (typically a majority leader or manager) doesn’t call it out. Calling out reverse bias without seeming bigoted or unsympathetic lies in making a dispassionate enquiry with the sensed victim using “developmental enquiry.”

A study by DiverseCity Think Tank of more than 50,000 business leaders and professionals found that some 8 in 10 minority and ethnic employees have unresolved reverse bias. They admit to occasions when they’ve failed to give mostly white business leaders the benefit of the doubt and have perceived truly innocent comments (such as regarding their birthplace and appearance) as personal, prejudicial attacks or micro-aggressions. Or, they’ve misinterpreted unfavorable career-defining decisions as unconsciously motivated by bias.  Buki draws on personal experience and research, along with scenarios from clients, to illustrate how his “IDU? Methodology” offers an effective solution.

In this podcast:
