We get really good at seeing what is wrong, like problems or obstacles and this creates distress as whatever we focus on gets bigger and we see more of it. We need to focus on what is working to help build resilience and help develop more.
Refocusing attention can make a huge difference to our happiness. Focusing on what is good is very unnatural and does take courage as it is far easier to be critical.
Happiness for Dan, is a side affects of giving your life to something else… perhaps giving life to your country, your spouse, your children or an organisation. Happiness increases based on the size or the gift. If we have more abilities to “give ourselves” through discipline, our happiness increases. Happiness is not the ability to say “yes” to everything, but the ability to say “no”, so that you can say “yes” to something deeper, something that you want more.
