Dr Alex Hershaft - From the holocaust to animal rights

Dr Alex Hershaft was just 5 years old when the Nazis invaded his homeland of Poland. He and his family were forced into the Warsaw Ghetto but he survived one of the most brutal episodes in human history. After escaping Nazi persecution and immigrating to the USA, he went on to achieve a PhD in Chemistry and worked as an environmental consultant. In 1972, his life was changed during a routine inventory of a Midwest slaughterhouse. The horrific circumstances he witnessed would change the course of his life.

He is now the President and founder of Farm Animals Right Movement (FARM), an international nonprofit working to end the use of animals for food. In this podcast:

  • Alex talks about existing and surviving in the Warsaw Ghetto

  • How his experiences shaped his empathy towards animals

  • How the vegetarian and vegan movement is developing.
